|John Gunson: The Chief engineer with the Sheffield Waterworks Company who supervised the building of the Rivelin, Dale Dyke (original and current), Agden, Strines, and Dam Flask reservoirs; and was almost certainly involved with the Redmires dams.|
is Jim Gunson - who is a direct descendent of John Gunson. Born
and raised in Sheffield, Jim currently lives with his wife, Bertha, in
Canada. In 2004 he retired after decades of teaching college mathematics.
He currently spends time tending his garden, and making pottery: he is
also a keen photographer. His sister, Pat, still lives in the Gleadless
area of Sheffield, and Jim periodically returns to visit his home town.

Jim has an interest in his family history and connections with the Sheffield Flood. He is associated with the 'Gunson Society' - a circle of people united by their common name: Jim remarks: 'There are circa 2000 of us world wide. I have corresponded with a Gunson in Poole, who is descended from a different son of John Gunson.'
This photograph was taken on 1st June 2001, and shows Jim, and his sister Pat (Scoffield), visiting the grave of their ancestor John Gunson - which is located in the central area of the old Sheffield 'General Cemetery':
The 'upright' gravestone, seen on the extreme right, marks another 'Gunson' grave - that of a number of 'John's' descendants - spanning the latter years of the 19th century - and advancing up to 1924. The horizontal tombstone carries the following inscription:
|IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE OF
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE OCTOBER 10th. 1886, AGED 77 YEARS.
"HIS END WAS PEACE"
ALSO CHARLOTTE, WIFE OF THE ABOVE,
|WE HOPED AS A TREASURE FOR LIFE,
THY PRESENCE TO US HAD BEEN GIVEN,
BUT REMOVED FROM ALL SORROW AND STRIFE,
THOU ART HAPPY BELOVED IN HEAVEN.
FREDRICK CHARLES THE BELOVED SON OF
THOMAS AND ANN GUNSON
AND GRANDSON OF THE FORENAMED
BORN AT BRIGHTON MARCH 10th. 1857.
DIED APRIL 24th. 1867.
A rare photograph of John Gunson which was loaned for the 'Sheffield Flood 140th Anniversary Exhibition' by his descendent Derek Gunson (right) of Grenoside, Sheffield (note the striking resemblance!). On the left is John Bailey - instigator and chief organiser of the 'Anniversary Events/Exhibition'. The photograph was taken at the opening of the Exhibition on Saturday 13th March 2004.
