Small World
Words & Music by Mick Armitage and Steve Saville

 Audio sample
The first part of this song was jointly written with Steve Saville during one of the re-unions we had around mid-1976. In the months that followed I continued adding bits; but it was not until late '77 that it was completed. It is based on the idea of two old friends bumping into each other after a few years apart (hence the title - 'Small World') - and the conversation that results. I made the initial recording of this song alone, but ideally, the two separate 'conversational' parts need to be sung by separate individuals. This I did some years later by recording it with Stuart Ward, but our voices were not different enough to create the desired effect. I always enjoyed singing and playing this song.

Small World

"Hey there friend how are you?
How's life been treating you for the past two years?
I heard you lost your job."

"Me, I've been doin' fine,
Building on these dreams of mine;
Did you hear about the girl who broke my heart?"

"Hey I've been through it all,
I know how easy it is to fall in love - - in love.
But you' gotta take the good times with the bad,
The times when you're happy, the times when you are sad - -
So sad."

CHORUS:
Although life treats you so unkind,
It's hard to leave the past behind;
Memories seem to linger on,
After all the pain has gone.

      ****

"Hey there friend how' you doin'?
And how's life been treating you for the past two years,
And how 's the family?"

"Hey, everybody's fine,
But I can't sell this heart of mine,
It seems just like no one wants to know."

"Hey I've been through it all,
I know how easy it is to fall in love - - in love.
But you've gotta take the good times with the bad,
The times when you're happy, the times when you are sad - -
So sad."

CHORUS:
Although life treats you so unkind,
It's hard to leave the past behind;
Memories seem to linger on,
After all the pain has gone.

      ****

"Hey there friend I don't know,
How you kept your smile after all these years,
And all that you've been through."

"Hey, it's the only way,
But look at the time now it's gettin' late,
I' better bid you goodbye and be on my way,
I' better bid you goodbye and be on my way,
I' better bid you goodbye - - and be on my way."
