Cann's
Words & Music by Mick Armitage

'Cann's' - no, not a miss-spelling of the French sea-side resort, but the musical/electrical store (Philip Cann's) where I first started work, and served my T/V engineer apprenticeship in their basement workshop. Another one of my few humorous songs: I wrote it while working there in 1974 . . . .

Cann's

I go to Cann's every day,
And roll up late the same old way;
I miss the bus in seconds flat,
And every morning's just like that.
No matter just how hard I try,
To catch the bus it just goes by;
Leaves me standin' there in vain,
Without my coat it starts to rain,
This life is driving me insane,
-- But that's the way it goes!

Eventually when I arrive,
There's so much work no time to skive;
I work so hard the time goes fast,
And then it's break time at last.
Now there's a hundred stairs to climb,
To reach the tea room just to find,
The tea machine's run out of tea,
It never bloody works for me,
I think I'll leave this company,
-- But then I think I'll stay!

The management you ought to see;
All day long they're suppin' tea;
They've really nothing else to do,
Except their lunch from twelve 'till two.
They'll greet you with their plastic grin,
As long as money's rolling in,
And they won't sell you nothing cheap,
They don't like me 'cos I'm no creep,
And half the time they're fast asleep,
-- In fact I think it's more!

But then I wake up Sunday morning
Full of laughter, stop my yawning
No more Cann's until the following day
Twelve o'clock Sunday evening
Stop my laughter, start my grieving
Philip Cann's is just eight hours away!

I go to Cann's every day,
And roll up late the same old way;
I miss the bus in seconds flat,
And every morning's just like that.
No matter just how hard I try,
To catch the bus it just goes by;
Leaves me standin' there in vain,
Without my coat it starts to rain,
This life is driving me insane,
-- But that's the way it goes!
