GAYE

Gaye
Won't you let me have a say
In the way you behave
I won't last another day
If you decide to go away.

You're the tray of nice things
I upset yesterday
The display of bright rings
I let slip away.

Oh Gaye
You allay my every fear
In a most extraordinary way
If I thought that I could find my way without you
I would not ask you to stay.

INSTRUMENTAL

You're the tray of nice things
I upset yesterday
The mainstay of my dreams
That I let slip away.

Gaye
Won't you let me have a say
In the way you behave
I won't last another day
If you decide to go away.

Don't go away
Oh please stay
Don't go away
Please stay.

WHEREWITHAL

I wish I had the wherewithal
To attract your attention.
Wish I had the wherewithal
To attract your attention.

You are so nonpareil
You introduce a new elation in my life
But you are so nonchalant
I don't suppose this new sensation will materialise.

I wish I had the wherewithal
To attract your attention.
Wish I had the wherewithal
To attract your attention.

If I hadn't inhibitions enough to cope with
Now you come along beautiful and leave me hoping
If it wasn't complicated enough to start with
Now you're making this feeling so hard to part with.

INSTRUMENTAL

You are so nonpareil
You introduce a new elation in my life
But you are so nonchalant
I don't suppose this new sensation will materialise.

I wish I had the wherewithal
To attract your attention.
Wish I had the wherewithal
To attract your attention.
I wish I had the wherewithal
To attract your attention.
(Repeat and fade).

THE DUBIOUS CIRCUS COMPANY

Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see our show
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see our show

Would you like to meet the lion tamer or the man
Who kicks up the sawdust in the nicest way?
Would you like to see the fire-eater take the stand?
The flames don't affect him in the slightest way
If you're feeling curiously interested in
Something new, then come on through, the show will soon begin

But if you come when the lights are down and ev'ryone is out of town
We'll put on a show, yes the best that you've seen yet
Yes if you come when it's late at night and ev'rybody's out of sight
We'll give you a performance you never will forget.

Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see our show
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see our show

Take your time and make your mind up ev'rybody's here
Clowns and dwarfs and elephants, and lots of circus cheer.

Would you like to meet the lady with the crystal ball?
She looks in the future and she sees it all
Would you like to have a drink or two with big fat Joan?
She knows what it's all about at twenty stone
If you're feeling curiously interested in
Something new, then come on through, the show will soon begin

But if you come when the lights are down and ev'ryone is out of town
We'll put on a show yes the best you've seen yet
Yes if you come when it's late at night and ev'rybody's out of sight
We'll give you a performance you never will forget.

Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see our show
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see-ee
Would you like to see our show

Take your time and make your mind up ev'rybody's here
Clowns and dwarfs and elephants, and lots of circus cheer.

NIGHTINGALE

Nightingale so beautiful I love to hear you sing
You possess such perfect pitch it really is astounding
Nightingale so beautiful I love to here your song
The melody of which sets my heart a pounding
Once upon a summer night when I was on my own
I ventured out and found you singing to no one
(Singing to no one).

Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)
Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)
Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)
Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)

And though the poet praised you in a more artistic way
I'd like to reaffirm it lest you fly away
Please don't fly away.

Nightingale so beautiful I love to hear you sing
You possess such perfect pitch it really is astounding
Nightingale so beautiful I love to here your song
The melody of which sets my heart a pounding
You have been admired for a very long time
And I know your song will live much longer than mine
(Longer than mine).

Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)
Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)
Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)
Nightingale you're so exciting (Nightingale)
(Repeat and fade).

WHERE WOULD THAT LEAVE ME?

Why don't you tell me you love me?
Why don't you say that you care?
I might do something extravagant
Like play with your hair.

Where would that lead me?
Up to your bedroom and into your arms
Would you please me
Or would your conscience save you?

Where would that leave me?
Where would that leave me?

I won't pretend to be perfect
If you won't pretend that I should
We might do something indiscreet
Ah, you know we could.

Where would that lead me?
Up to your bedroom and into your arms
Would you please me
Or would your conscience save you?

Where would that leave me?
Where would that leave me?
Where would that leave me?
Where would that leave me?
(Repeat and fade).

THE TRAVELLER

On a day when the devil, and the world sat down together
And talked away the hours like a couple of old friends
While their children all played on the village green together
With guns, and bombs, and tanks, and lots of fighter aeroplanes
There came an outsider, from where no one could say
But simply and straightforwardly he tried to save the day
He said:

"God so loved the world
That He gave His only son.
God so loved the world
That He gave His only son".

And all the politicians, and the scholars said "how sad"
And after consultation they decided he was mad
"Conspiracy!" they shouted, "chicanery!" they said
"He's nothing but a trickster and completely off his head!".

With sorrow and with anger he looked on their stupidity
And left them debating on the future of mankind
He came to the market-place of subterfuge activity
Anxious to know what attitude he would find
Amidst all the bargaining he spoke up loud and clear
The people turned to listen with a condescending ear
He said:

"God so loved the world
That He gave His only son.
God so loved the world
That He gave His only son".

No sooner had he started than the violence broke out
They railed and they cursed him - just another long-haired lout
"You sponger! you parasite! we fought for the likes of you
We give you education and just look where it leads to".

The Devil raised his glass as the traveller set forth
To leave the village far behind became his only thought
But as he reached the outskirts he stopped to rest a while
And children's voices singing in the schoolhouse made him smile:

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The bible tells me so.

(The above chorus repeated, and sung
simultaneously with the chorus below - until fade)

"God so loved the world
That He gave His only son.
God so loved the world
That He gave His only son".

HOME THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD

I could be a millionaire if I had the money
I could own a mansion, no I don't think I'd like that
But I might write a song that makes you laugh, now that would be funny
And you could tell your friends in England you'd like that
But now I've chosen aeroplanes and boats to come between us
And a line or two on paper wouldn't go amiss
How is Worcestershire? Is it still the same between us?
Do you still use television to send you fast asleep?
Can you last another week? Does the cistern still leak?
Or have you found a man to mend it?
Oh, and by the way, how's your broken heart?
Is that mended too? I miss you
I miss you, I really do.

I've been reading Browning, Keats and William Wordsworth
And they all seem to be saying the same thing for me
Well I like the words they use, and I like the way they use them
You know, Home Thoughts From Abroad is such a beautiful poem
And I know how Robert Browning must have felt
'Cause I'm feeling the same way about you
Wondering what you're doing and if you need some help
Do I still occupy your mind? Am I being so unkind?
Do you find it very lonely, or have you found someone to laugh with?
Oh, and by the way, are you laughing now?
'Cause I'm not, I miss you
I miss you, I really do.

I really do.

WHERE'S IT GOING TO END?

Caught up in an endless stream of traffic
Makes me wonder whether she will wait
And where's it going to end?

Our love is just another broken down motor car
I need your help to get it back on the road
It's brought us such a long way and we could still go far
But for the fact that the engine is cold.

If you love me why don't you get out and help me push?
We could get it started if we really wanted to
I know the steering's not much good but we can get it fixed
All it needs is just a little overhaul
(Little overhaul).

Our love is just another broken down motor car
Our love is just another broken down motor car.

Caught up in an endless stream of traffic
Makes me wonder whether she will wait
And where's it going to end?
Where's it going to end?

TIME THE MAGICIAN

A sweet occasion such as this
Another chance to reminisce
And though together we have grown
It's magical how time has flown.

Remember at the outset
A very long while ago?
You were just a schoolgirl
And I was your big hello.

But time, the magician played a few old tricks on us
Time, the magician played a few old tricks on us.

Remember when you first said
That you would love me always
And how you fascinated
Me in so many ways?

But time, the magician played a few old tricks on us
Time, the magician played a few old tricks on us.

A sweet occasion such as this
Another chance to reminisce
And though together we have grown
It's magical how time has flown.

Remember at the outset
A very long while ago?
You were just a schoolgirl
And I was your big hello.

But time, the magician played a few old tricks on us
Time, the magician played a few old tricks on us.

Time, the magician played a few old tricks on us
Time, the magician played a few old tricks on us
Time, the magician played a few old tricks on us
Time, the magician played a few old tricks on us
(Repeat and fade).

GIVE ME ONE MORE CHANCE

Won't you give me one more chance, baby won't you try?
Won't you give me one more chance, baby won't you try?

If you were here with me then I could explain
It doesn't have to be like this I'm to blame.

Won't you give me one more chance, baby won't you try?
Won't you give me one more chance, baby won't you try?

If I could talk to you just give me some time
I wouldn't ask you to but, I'm losing my mind.

INSTRUMENTAL

If I could talk to you just give me some time
I wouldn't ask you to but, I'm losing my mind
Give me one more chance.

COLD WIND BLOWING

There's a cold wind blowing, but it's missing me
'Cause I'm so warm in your company
So don't you worry girl, don't you cry
You really can smile so let me help you try.

You say there's nothing left
But I would disagree
Your life has come adrift
Anchor yourself to me.

There's a cold wind blowing, but it's missing me
'Cause I'm so warm in your company
So don't you worry girl, don't you cry
You really can smile so let me help you try.

THE OPEN UNIVERSITY

Let me tell you 'bout a girl who's breaking my heart
She decided lately to get smart
She read an article that changed her life
So tired of working in a factory
She joined the Open University.

We used to have a lot of fun you know
Spend our money and away we'd go
But now whenever I go round to call
She's reading Lawrence and T. H. Huxley
With the Open University.

INSTRUMENTAL

She never cared for school - such a drag
Now she's qualification mad
She's corresponding like a politician
Her main objective is an arts degree
God help the Open University.

CRISIS

Crisis
Crisis
Crisis
Crisis.

Crowded room, cigarette smoke, fast talkers, sheep in wolves clothing
Glasses chinking, spilling drink, drinking, filling, wolves in sheep's clothing
Suddenly from out the mass that familiar face emerges
First reaction, she looks nice, then realises it's his wife!

"Hey what you doing here? You had better explain"
He says "I left my engine running and I think I'll do the same!"
She says "Come back here, explain yourself!"
He stops to think it out
And regaining all his confidence says "What about yourself?"

It's a crisis
Crisis
Crisis
Crisis.

Music loud, people louder, sophisticated ugly sight
Discreet departure, lady friend, back to his place, three wrongs don't make a right
Suddenly through the front door wife and boyfriend, big surprise
Recurrence of the previous scene, you think these people would get wise.

"Hey what you doing here? You had better explain"
He says "I left my engine running and I think I'll do the same!"
She says "Come back here, explain yourself!"
He stops to think it out
And regaining all his confidence says "What about yourself?"

It's a crisis
Crisis
Crisis
Crisis
(Repeat and fade).
