This poem was composed during the last few months Anne spent at Roe Head School. It has been suggested that certain aspects of it are unlike those usually produced by Anne, such as several of the stark phrases 'one long piercing shriek', and 'that cursed scream'; and that it is more like the type of poetry Emily was producing around this period. However, other aspects, including the fact that the MS is actually signed by Anne, indicate that it is almost certainly Anne's creation.

| I'm buried now; I've done with life; I've done with hate, revenge and strife; I've done with joy, and hope and love And all the bustling world above. Long have I dwelt forgotten here No hope, no pleasure can I find: And in one hour of calm repose I dream of liberty, 'tis true, I dream about the world, but then That world -- that when I wake and see And yet it is not always so; It was a pleasant summer's day, My heart was full, I wept for joy, Just them I heard in whisper sweet I thought he smiled and spoke to me, Alas! Alas! That cursed scream Marina Sabia |
